Nicholas Gaffga

Career Story:

After residency, I participated in CDC's 2-year Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) fellowship program for applied epidemiology where I led multiple domestic and international investigations of food-borne disease outbreaks. Subsequently, I worked for three years on the improvement of systems for surveillance of sexually transmitted diseases in the US. My current position is as country director of CDC operations in Angola. Our primary mandate is to work for HIV/AIDS prevention through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. I am learning the fine art of working with the US Ambassador, US Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Department of Defense to collaborate with Angola's Ministry of Health to implement AIDS prevention activities as well as activities of the President's Malaria Initiative, polio and measles elimination, influenza capacity building, and emerging infectious disease detection.I work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a medical epidemiologist.
